I shared with you before how working in and for the community is a challenge that is rewarding, but very often heartbreaking as well. There are things going on in families that leave me speechless at times. Sometimes, the dysfunction is so bizarre, so shocking, that I want to throw my hands up in the air and scream, "Uncle!" Sometimes, I wonder how did it get to be so bad?
The truth is, pain and suffering and dysfunction of the family dates back to the beginning of time.
In today's Torah reading (Genesis 23:1 - 25:8) we are taken in to the home of Abraham and Sarah and their children. Talk about family dysfunction! Lying, stealing, cheating, adultery, deception and jealousy. This family history reads like an episode from a current reality television series.
And yet, God transformed this mess of a family in to a "Great Nation."
