I stepped outside a little while ago to take this picture. What I saw was a dark New Year's Eve night. I saw my neighbors holding hands and walking to their car. I saw the stray cat that gets into my trash. I saw the flash of the bulb. But, what I didn't see until now, is this diapositive of liquid light. A strange and beautiful bending of color and exposure. Inside the glass, I see a brilliant sunset against a calm sea. And there --- a thin, vapor of clouds separated by a golden sky. Perhaps a perfect white pearl sinking ever so slowly in a glass of champagne.
My focus, when I took this photo, was on the obvious and not on subtle possibilities. And, I think, this is how I lived this last year. I had been looking through a glass darkly and what I saw was dirty, muddy water.
Well, it's a new year and I need to stir up that water. I might have to wait a little while, but pretty soon the water will clear. And maybe, just maybe, I'll see what I didn't see before.
Look closer. What do you see?
